Reading, whether it is a short story, newspaper, or novel, can affect the way the people view things. Reading has changed countless opinions and views of history and many other things around the world. Most people mature and develop better analytical skills from reading a wide variety of different literary pieces. â€Å"Hills Like White Elephants† by Ernest Hemingway, A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry, and â€Å"The Man He Killed† by Thomas Hardy are three pieces of literature that have significantly impacted me as a reader. â€Å"Hills Like White Elephants† by Hemingway is a short story about a girl who is put into a position to make an important decision. She sits with a man whom she has an intimate relationship with. While they sit at a train station, they discuss and argue about the important decision. The man portrays a masculine and controlling demeanor while the girl portrays dependence and a naà ¯ve type love towards the man. Throughout the story , the man tries to encourage the girl to make the decision, portraying a false sense of care for the girl. It is evident in the story that the man does not care for the girl as much as she cares for him. The man shows agitation towards the confused girl. While the girl questions her decision, the man already made his decision. The girl drinks throughout their argument to find courage. â€Å"Service to humanity is service to God†. This saying has been a great influence in my opting for ‘medicine’ as career. The inane desire in me to serve the humanity while pursuing career goals helped in selecting the course, as this field has lot to learn while curing the injured or infirm. Having a decent job, gaining the respect amongst peers and in the society are the factors which motivate someone to start thinking about a particular direction. In the healthcare sector I have worked as Research assistant at Alexian Brothers Medical Center, and at Loyola University School of Medicine. Since this is the kind of job which gives satisfaction to the inner self, so I have also worked in healthcare sector as a volunteer as well at couple of places. This has been the driving force behind my opting to undertake some of the community programs to serve the society. A doctor is considered as a savior by the needy people. Today, the health care has acquired an industry status, which has also resulted in many people not being able to afford visiting the physician regularly. I’d like to be a part of the lives of such people as well, so that I can share my knowledge and experience with the lesser privileged. My short term goal is to gain credentials as a qualified learner, who’s ready to accept the challenges and learn from them. The need for doctors is also on the rise, as in today’s fast paced society there are many physical and psychological issues requiring adequate attention. Therefore, I decided to pursue the medical degree in right earnest. I am a hard working person with an ability to adapt myself to any sort of environment, which is bound to help me in dealing with different sets of circumstances as a doctor. I believe a reputed degree in medicine from Wayne will provide me with the best opportunity to gain the expertise required and to take a leadership role in community development programs and in helping fellow human beings. Wayne State University has been doing pioneering research work in fields like human research subjects, Nanoscience and nanotechnology etc. These researches will help in shaping the career of medical professionals in the near future. I believe a reputed degree in medicine from Wayne will provide me with the best opportunity to gain the expertise required and to take a leadership role in community development programs and in helping fellow human beings. Leadership in simple terms means an ability to lead others around. I feel that I do have some leadership skills as well. Perhaps as recognition of this trait, I was invited to attend some leadership program during my college days. Though it might be too early to boast about these qualities, but I am sure the kind of confidence that I gained by attending these conferences will surely help me out in leading a life full of experiences in which I could have the support and cooperation from my colleagues and friends. I am reasonably confident with these abilities and promises I’ll prove to be an asset for Wayne State University.

Movie TED Review

TED is a fantasy comedy movie produced in the year 212 in the United States of America. Seth MacFarlane was the film’s co-writer, co-producer and director. Macfarlane also played the starring role together with Mila Kunis and Mark Walhbergs in the movie. Giovanni Ribis and Joe McHale played the role of the supporting cast.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Movie TED Review specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More This movie is MacFarlane’s feature-length directional first appearance (Fleming 1), and its production was carried out by â€Å"Media Rights Capital† and distribution was undertaken by â€Å"Universal pictures†. The release of the movie was done on the 29th day of June in the year 2012, to commercial and crucial success, turning out to be the year’s 12th greatest-grossing movie and the â€Å"highest-grossing original R-rated comedy of all time† (Smith 1). This movie as wel l obtained an â€Å"Academy award nomination for Best Original Song† (Smith 1). I think Ted movie may not have much to offer in regard to sensitivity and subtleness, but it brings a lot of laughs In this movie, we find John Bennett who is a lonely boy and desires that his teddy bear he calls Ted, would come to life so that it becomes his best companion. This desire is fulfilled at the point when, during one night, a star falls and the teddy bear turns out to be completely alive. The freshly living toy briefly turns out to be a small superstar, but does not lose track of their companionship with John. Two decades later, in the year 2012, John and Ted remain to be staunch friends, taking joy in a pleasure-seeking life, even if John was establishing a close relationship with Lori Collins, a worker in the office. Lori is willing to marry John but her worries is that this might not be possible, having Ted around. John does not plan to drive Ted out. However, in the moment when Ted comes home with four prostitutes, John is ready to take a step upon his decision to help Ted move out. A short time thereafter, John finds an apartment for Ted who gets a job in a grocery store. On his new job position, Ted displays irresponsible and appalling conduct, which assists him to earn promotion and get acquainted with his fellow worker, Tami-Lynn. John and Ted still engage in spending much time together and this does not go well with Lori when she comes to find out that John has been occasionally not going to work in order to spend time with Ted. The events that followed led to the destruction of the relationship between Lori and John but the two settled things afterwards.Advertising Looking for essay on art and design? During that night, Lori engages in making a wish on the falling start. In the following morning, Ted magically comes back to life and John and Lori makes reconciliation with Ted. The couple is encouraged by Ted to restore their relationship and having resolved this, Lori and John now get married and Ted eventually agrees to have a life of his own. It might be an exaggeration to present claims that the movie Ted is an ironic explanation of the western male culture’s infantilised state. This is for the reason that the movie is, as Peter Bradshaw points out, â€Å"not so much a satire as a cheerfully and un-ironically supportive celebration† (Bradshaw 1). This movie could be read â€Å"as some sort of M Night Shyamalan-type mystery, or wish-fulfilment tale of males somehow finding a way to let their id cathartically speak out, loud and proud – though here again we are straying into Gibson/Beaver territory† (Bradshaw 1). In the actual sense, this film is possibly another case of the reminiscence to which the screen comedians may be vulnerable: the reminiscence for either the former or current student days when one was messing around, engaging in talking about having enjoyment and watching dim-witted shows on television – the good-humoured environment from which the noxious grave vocation of comedy initially came up (Bradshaw 1). In this film, MacFarlane incorporates a critical orientation to Jack and Jill, an atrocious comedy of Adam Sandler. The poster portraying Ted and John at urinals is similar to that of the 1999 Big Daddy comedy of Sandler foster-father, and of course, as Peter Bradshaw points out, â€Å"the knowing, goof-off mood is reminiscent of Judd Apatow’s interesting film ‘Funny People’, about the emotionally paralyzed life of a madly successful Hollywood comedian† (Bradshaw 1). I think Teddy is a very funny film and is an enjoyable one. For instance, watching the bizarre exchange between Ted and John regarding the topic of â€Å"white-tra sh names† as well as their eventual fall-out and the resultant brutal and lengthy fighting within the hotel room is very enjoyable occurrence (â€Å"Priceless comedy† 1). This movie may be dismissed by some people with a claim that ‘comedy is quite subjective’, which is a statement, presented by analysts to imply that this is totally and â€Å"objectively unfunny but I am not far too wearily mature to argue about it† (Bradshaw 1). In my personal opinion, comedy can be subjective, however, no more so as compared to anything else. The Ted movie does not have much to offer in regard to sensitivity as well as subtleness, but it brings a lot of laughs.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Movie TED Review specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More In Ted movie, there is throwing in of some excellent action scenes and all the characters in the film have this laid back technique which makes the movie to feel a bit more natural. Ted is seen to be clearly the star in the film, even if his selfish lifestyle was destroying John’s, his best friend, love with Lori. The character of John was played by mark Walhbergs and this character has to have been a fresh approach for this actor (â€Å"Priceless comedy† 1). Mark Walhbergs is usually playing roles that are more serious, but in this film, it is quite wonderful to how excellent this actor can actually engage in dumping himself down. On the other hand, the character of Lori Collins is played by Mila Kunis and she does this effortless. Mila is known to be a beautiful actress (â€Å"Priceless comedy† 1). Animations were used in Ted to portray particular characters. For instance, the character of Ted was produced by the creation of MacFarlane’s actions â€Å"wearing a motion capture suit† (Amidi 1). Basing on an interview conducted with Jenny Fulle, the producer of visual effects, he points out that they actually put focus on the motion capture from MacFarlane’s waist-up, for the reason that he has much mannerisms â€Å"with his hands and he rocks back and forth and moves backwards and forwards and stuff like that† (Amidi 1). The producer reports that what they would also do was to â€Å"keep a high definition camera on his face† (Amidi 1). By doing this, they could as well be able to capture the visual actions on his eyebrows and other actions on the face. However, according to Jonathan Lyons, one of the film’s animators; not only did the entire facial animation â€Å"key-framed† but a large number of physical performance was key-framed as well. According to analysts, the Ted movie greatly succeeds on the film’s animation that helps in serving the story’s needs very well. Amidi Amid points out that as on one hand motion capture was certainly a part and parcel of toolset of the filmmaker, it is quite apparent that there was key-frami ng of a large animation’s part – a similar type of animation which can be seen in the DreamWorks as well as Pixar films (Amidi 1). The motion picture will go on receiving uneven level of media coverage for a simple reason that it is more appealing to portray a performer jump about in â€Å"a fancy suit than it is a sullen animator sitting behind a monitor† (Amidi 1). Eventually, however, such attractive and appealing for audience movies as Ted are created first of all with the help of traditional â€Å"character animators†. There was extending of design in Ted movie from production to costuming. Debra McGuire, the costumer of the film, point out that when producing a story which is quite funny, vulgar, and out there, the most remarkable thing to do is to maintain the characters in the movie grounded in reality.Advertising Looking for essay on art and design? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More This costumer points out that MacFarlane had fondness for â€Å"Freaks and Geeks† that was generally based on realty. Therefore he had awareness that the designers would achieve this with Ted movie. Considering a character like John in the movie, even if he is not a spine-chilling dresser, he is still able to sport a distinctive appearance. He is described as being a complicated person (Sondergaard 1). On the other hand, the sense of style that Lori has is informed by the manner in which she dressed as well as the way the decoration and designing of the apartment they share with John has been carried out (Sondergaard 1). Ted is a movie that movie may not have much to give in regard to subtleness and sensitivity, but it brings much laughs. This movie is a comedy which was produced in the United States of America by MacFarlane in the year 2012. It has been found out that, in this film, John Bennett had desires that his teddy bear he calls Ted, would come to life so that it beco mes his best companion and his desire comes to be realized when Ted gets life and they become friends. At some point, Ted becomes an obstacle to the relationship between John and his girlfriend but things are later sorted out. In Ted movie, there is throwing in of some exceptional action scenes and all the characters in the film have this laid back technique which makes the movie to feel a bit more natural. This movie is not actually for children as it deals with issues that affect adult people. There is excellent use of animations in the movie, which makes it more interesting. Moreover, there was extending of design in Ted movie from production to costuming, to ensure the movie achieves the objectives for which it is produced. Works Cited Amidi, Amid. Conflicting Emotions in Neil Simons The Odd Couple essays

Conflicting Emotions in Neil Simon's The Odd Couple essays The mood and tone of The Odd Couple is very contrasting, to say the least. There is always conflicting emotions going on at once which help the work as whole. There are a handful of moods, each of which goes very deep into the movie's plot. Some of these scenes contain multiple moods, such a happy, sad, depressed, and humorous. The Odd Couple evokes many emotions from the viewer, and places significance on certain events to help the work Starting with the beginning of the movie, the scene starts out dark and with a sad beat. It is set in downtown New York, at nighttime. Felix is a lone man, walking without a purpose; the camera is panned out to show dozens of couples around him, having fun. This part of the scene alone invokes a lot of emotion. The gloominess of the scene itself says a lot, as it gives the viewer a sad emotion from the start. Felix walking along the streets of New York alone also gives the viewer a feeling of depression, as they see Felix roam the streets, obviously a man in great distress. As he is walking, an experienced viewer can notice that since the streets of New York are riddled with couples, having fun and enjoying themselves and it can contrast Felix's depressed mood by showing the happy, couples, then you see the distressed Felix, whose wife had just divorced him. It doesn't say that he is depressed directly, but by analyzing the tone of it, with his shoulders slouched, and his face has a look of misery on it. His tie is slightly undone, as if he's been through a long day. He walks without a purpose, leading the viewer in with curiosity to find out why Felix is so depressed. The lighting adds to his mood, mirroring it. The next scene that evokes emotion from the viewer is when Felix is walking to his room. As he is slowly lumbers in, the cleaning lady says goodnight, and he says goodbye, with a look of deep remorse on his face. This furthers the concern fo...

Should You Take the ACT or the SAT

Should You Take the ACT or the SAT SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips If you're in high school, you may be wondering whether you should take the SAT or the ACT. In general, the two tests have gotten much more similarsince the SAT was revamped in 2016,but there are still a few differences that may sway you towards one or the other. In this guide, I've outlined some of the key factors you should keep in mind when deciding which test to focus on and created a quiz that can help you determine which test will be better for you. The first thing you should do is take anACTandSAT practice testand compare your scores. We have a conversion table where you can easily see how your SAT and ACT scores stack up. If you score much higher on one test than the other, I recommend that you study for and take the test you did better on. If your scores are pretty close and you're still not sure which exam to take, keep reading. Next, I recommend checkingwhether one exam or the other is required at your school. It's easier to study for a test you're already familiar with, so if your school requires either the ACT or the SAT, you'll want to seriously consider sticking to the requiredtest. Now, let's move on to the key reasons you might want to go with each test, starting with the SAT. Feature Image: jimflix!/Flickr Take the SAT If You... #1: Panic When Faced With Time Limits One of the most noticeable differences between the redesigned SAT and the ACT is the amount of time per question- you have much more of it on the SAT. This doesn't actually make the SAT easier, since its actual questions tend to be harder, but it does mean thatthe ACT feels like more of a time crunch than the SAT. As such, doing well on the ACTrequires calm in the face of time limits. If you struggle to move through material quickly or tend to panic, you'll likely do better with the SAT. #2: Can’t Stand the Idea of Not Getting to Every Question On the SAT, you have enough time to get to most of the questions, as long as you use it wisely. On the ACT, you probably won't finish all of the sections unless you're scoring a 30 or above. If you have an obsessive need to answer every single question, you should stick tothe SAT. #3: Have a Hard Time Spotting Details When You Read SAT reading questions almost always give you the line number where you can find the relevant information. Even if they don't give you the exact location, the questions are in order, so it's rarely difficult to find information in the passage. ACT reading questions, on the other hand, are randomlyordered and frequently don't give line numbers, so finding specific details in the passage is one of the trickiest parts. If you struggle with retaining or finding details, you will probably prefer the SAT. #4: Struggle With Geometry ACT math has over three times as many geometry questions as the math section on the redesigned SAT. Plus, for the ACT, you need to memorize all the formulas, while on the SAT you're given them at the beginning of the section. If you have a very hard time with geometry, consider taking the SAT. #5: Want to Encounter as Little Science as Possible The ACT has a science section; the SAT does not. If you dislike science or struggle with quantitative thinking, you will probably prefer the SAT. The redesigned SAT does include science questions in each of its threesections, so there's no way to escape science entirely. Nonetheless, struggling withscience will have less of an effect on your score onthe SAT than it willon the ACT. #6: Excel at Writing Analytical Essays in English Class The SAT essayasks you to read and analyze a persuasive essay, much like you might for aclass assignment. If you like English class, you'll almost certainly prefer the SAT essay to the ACT one. That being said, neither essay affects your overall score, so a preference for one or the othershouldn't play a major role in your decision between the two tests. Click on the button below to register for one of our livestreams today! Next up: the six reasons you might prefer the ACT. Remember you'll have to study forwhichever test you choose. (Image: m00by/Flickr) Take the ACT If You... #1:Struggle With Vocabulary Although it no longer has sentence completion questions, the redesigned SATstill tests more challenging vocabulary on both the reading and writing sections. It also has harder passages on the reading section and more vocab questions overall. The ACT is the better test if you want to avoid higher-level words like "satiated" and "apprehensive" and older passages with challenging language. #2: Can't Always Explain How You Know an Answer Is Correct One of the big changes to the SAT is the addition of evidence questions on the reading section. These questions ask you to point to the part of the passage that supports your answer to another question- #14 is an example: Evidencequestions aren't as novel as they might seem at first, since, in theory, you should always be able to point to the support for your answer in the passage. But if this is a skill you really struggle with, consider taking the ACT instead. #3:Are Intimidated by Doing Math Without a Calculator The SAT has a no-calculator section, so if the idea of doing math without a calculator has you completely freaked out, you may want to stick to the ACT. However, the no-calculator section really doesn't require any complicated calculations. In fact, all of the math questions on both testscanbe done without a calculator, though some are rather challenging. The question is really whether you feel comfortable doing some basic calculations by hand. If not, the SAT will be a challenge for you. #4: Prefer That Different Topics Be Tested in Different Sections One of the goals of the SAT redesign is to integrateimportant skills across all three sections, so there's more overlap between the different sections than on the ACT. One key example of this new policy is the presence of quantitative questions in the reading and writing sections of the SAT. If you'd prefer to avoid this kind of concept mixing, stick with the ACT. #5: Have a Solid Grasp of Experimental Design If you like science, and especially if you have a good understanding of how experiments are built and know the difference between independent and dependentvariables, consider taking the ACT. The ACT asks a lot ofquestionsabout experimental design whilethe SAT new science questions are solely focused on reading charts and graphs. A strong grasp of these concepts will give you a considerable leg up on the ACT. #6: Like to Give Your Opinion The ACT essay is all about arguing for your own point (unlike the SAT essay, which is about analyzing someone else's argument). If you enjoystating your opinion and marshaling examples to back it up, then you will probably prefer the ACT essay. Remember, however, that you may not need to take the essay at all and that, even if you do, it doesn't affect your overall score. You can choose your own adventure in studying. (Image: Nathan Penglington, photo byColin Ross/Flickr) Quiz: Should You Take the ACT or the SAT? In case you're still on the fence about which test you want to focus on, I've created a handy quiz. It sums up all of the ideas above (except those relating to the optional essays) in one easy-to-use chart. To use it, just go through and check"yes" or "no" for each question. Then tally up your answers and give yourself one point for each "yes." Scroll down for an explanation of what your score means. Question Yes No Do you perform well under time pressure? Are you okay with not answering every question on a test? Do you struggle to explain why you think an answer is correct? Do you have a hard timewith high level vocab words? Can you spot details ina passage without reading it closely? Do you dread doing math without a calculator? Do you excel at geometry? Do you prefer each topic be tested separately? Do you understand experimental design? Do you like science? Let's go through what your score means: 1-3: You're an SAT person! If you answered "no" to most of the questions, you'll probably find the SAT more your style. You don't mind slightly harder questions as long asyou don't have to rush and don't have to cover too much material. 4-7: You can do either! If you answered "no" and "yes" roughly the same amount, you will probably find the tests equally approachable. If you're willing to put in the time, try taking one practice test for each and see if you have a strong preference. 8-10: You'll likethe ACT! If you answered mostly "yes," then you're more of an ACT person. You don't mind moving quickly, memorizing material, or answering questions about science. What's Next? A Comparison on Non-traditional Middle School Students Essay

A Comparison on Non-traditional Middle School Students - Essay Example From the discussion it is clear that  due to globalization, the United States has experienced an influx of foreigners in the last four decades resulting in changes in the public education sector. There has been a variation in academic performance between traditional and non-traditional students. According to Texas State’s statistics, 80% of traditional students move to high school in contrast to 34% for non-traditional students. Also, community-based providers and school officials that serve students in public schools have reported an increase in the number of non-traditional sixteen-year-old seventh graders or seventeen-year-old eighth graders remaining in middle school. This study stresses that  school districts are attempting to address the problem by making changes in their educational systems in order to address the needs of these students. The school officials have developed special programs and various strategies within schools to target the specific group of student s in middle school. The retention impacts negatively on the non-traditional students in middle school.  There are many middle school students who are retained in middle school, which increases the dropout rate by the time students reach high school. Various studies have evidenced other factors that cause students to be retained and become over-age in middle schools without interventions to alleviate the problems.  These students experience self-esteem issues, low reading and math skills, behavioral/emotional needs, a high need for individual attention.

Partnership and inter professional practice Essay

Partnership and inter professional practice - Essay Example Additionally, an overview of the key principles governing partnership and interprofessional practise, its positive and negative aspects, and the importance of working effectively within a team, are encompassed in the paper. A study was conducted on a 33-year old homeless British woman who had been admitted for treatment in a psychiatric hospital due to severe depression and a series of suicide attempts as a result of the past abusive relationship she had gone through. The preliminary findings suggested that the subject had been dependent on drugs and alcohol which made her even more vulnerable to exploitation. She also possessed erratic and antisocial behavior, suffered from sleep disturbances and was prone to self inflicted pain. There was also limited information on her family background. To further lay premise on the case study, it is imperative to discuss the component of interprofessional practise (IPP). IPP have been referred to as a practise where several professionals of diff erent expertise and functions work together as team to render improved services on health care. The focal point of this is the significance of pooling practitioner competencies and working in partnership with other sectors of the society to generate positive results that would be beneficial to the healthcare patients overall (Barr 2005). One of the strong points of IPP is that the treatment framework of the team may effectually vary as the requirements of the patient change. Practitioners may even work beyond the scope of their professions. To cite an example, practising nurses or medical assistants can carry out the duties of a general physician as the need arises. IPP focuses on the wellbeing of the patient rather than the individual practitioner’s line of work (Stone, Waller, Smith, Fuller, Bull, & Playford 2007). IPP may involve medical practitioners such as physicians, nurses, therapist to social workers to policy makers (Stone et al 2007). The contributing factors for t he success of IPP are cooperation, commitment, assertiveness, shared responsibility, communication, autonomy, coordination and governance. Basically, these elements refer to teamwork, dedication, open expression of ideas, the ability to deduce or see a health situation from the point of view of other health practitioners, and efficient organisation (Lindeke and Block 1998). Based on the case scenario, the composition of the team which may address the issues of Marilyn Hall are as follows: general physician, mental health nurse, clinical psychologist, psychiatrist, psychotherapist, occupational therapist, social worker and spiritual adviser. It was noted that the subject suffered physical abuse from her past relationship and aborted pregnancy; thus, a general checkup is recommended to evaluate her health condition. Seeking the service of a psychiatrist for counseling and treatment of severe depression is also recommended. Consultation with a clinical psychologist is also advised sinc e the subject had committed several suicide attempts. Professional help from a psychotherapist is needed to address her dependency on drugs and alcohol. The mental health nurse may provide assistance to ensure that the needs of the subject are effectively provided. The social workers can provide the necessary support outside the institution after the subject was discharged. Occupational therap

IKEA Essay Example for Free

IKEA Essay IKEA, the Swedish retailer, is known for its good-quality, inexpensive products, which are typically sold at prices 30–50% below those of its competitors. While the price of products from other companies continues to rise over time, IKEA’s retail prices have been reduced by a total of 20% over the last four years. At IKEA, the process of cost reduction starts at product conception and continues throughout the process of design, sourcing of materials and components, production, and distribution. For example, the â€Å"Bang† mug has been redesigned many times to realize shipping cost savings. Originally, 864 mugs would fit into a pallet. After redesign a pallet held 1,280 mugs, and with a further redesign 2,024 mugs could be squeezed into a pallet, reducing shipping costs by 60%. IKEA strives to deliver the right number of goods to the right stores at the right time to make sure that the deliveries are efficient. IKEA’s mantra in shipping has always been the same stating â€Å"We don’t want to pay to ship air†. IKEA’s products are shipped in flat boxes by not only reducing shipping for IKEA, but making it easier for customers to be able to slip it in the cargo hatch of a station wagon. New Product Process: Product Price The process of developing a new product at IKEA starts with a team of designers, product developer and purchasers who get together to discuss design, materials, suppliers and pricing. Everyone contributes and purchasers use their contacts with suppliers all over the world to find who can make this product at best quality for the right price at the right time. Manufacturer IKEA’s products are often developed in close cooperation with suppliers. IKEA has introduced a code of conduct governing working conditions and environmental awareness among suppliers. This deals with matters of health and safety at workplace that forbids use of child labor. IKEA implements quality control with external audits who check IKEA and external suppliers. The manufacturer is chosen based on several factors and kinds of materials used for the product. Design The team works with existing pool of manufacturers and suppliers with a price point to identify the best designer and select a design for production. This is a continuous process that involves designer submitting a brief about the product’s price, it’s function, materials used and fabricator’s capabilities. This design is reviewed by IKEA’S staff designers and freelances until the design is refined to be the best. Shipping IKEA has pioneered the concept of flat. This flat package enables IKEA to lower shipping costs by maximizing the use of space inside shipping containers. There is no storage waste. The company has estimated that if the products are assembled and shipped, then the transport volume would be six times it’s original. IKEA has created a global network of distribution centers, most of which are near container ports and major truck and rail routes for efficient distribution. Sales IKEA designs its stores – a kind of theme park traversing as a furniture outlet. The layout of an IKEA store guides shoppers through a predetermined path of several model homes. Customers can sit in, try it out. The emphasis is always on low priced products with yellow price tag. The IKEA centers have day care as well as dine in options. The biggest selling point is on price tag. Additional Features – Value for Customer IKEA contributes to adding value to the customer includes its relationship with suppliers, distribution and logistics, and customer service in their stores. IKEA keeps costs low and offers good quality products. IKEA tries to reduce their prices every year. Going green is the mantra adopted by the company along with ethics which believe in no child labor. The logistics and the way their products are packed to the way they are stored is remarkable. Providing an on-site day care and a cafà © makes the shopping experience good for children and their parents, to the way they display their products. The products are packed in such a way that customers can load them in the cars or u-hauls and transport them to their homes or offices. A customer is satisfied after viewing the product they have assembled.

New York Must Increase the Minimum Wage Essay -- Minimum Wage Essays

Living in Bushwick commuting to school four days a week to Coney Island, and going to work four days a week at Rite Aid in Sunnyside, Queens, is more overwhelming than what it sounds. Working overnight from Monday to Friday, earning minimum wage and being taxed on top of that isn’t enough due to prices of gas, food, and necessities sky-rocketing. The job pays $7.25 per hour but I make a $0.75 differential for working the night shift. It’s difficult to be a student and work when you only have yourself as a form of financial support. There are days I don’t sleep and hours before I get a meal, because I get trapped by my living expenses, its long before I am able to splurge on luxuries and wants. Nevertheless, it has become challenging to keep my GPA up and my academic performance to its capability, but there isn’t an alternative. Before the late 1930’s, there was not a federal minimum wage. Minimum wage is the least amount an employer can pay to their employees. The current federal minimum wage is $7.25. In the early 1900’s, during industrialization, employees worked for little up to no money. The working conditions during this era weren’t regulated and there weren’t any labor laws that instated the ethics of working conditions. In New York City, there were just over 500 sweatshop garment factories in where the working conditions were very hazardous and in one case, deadly. On March 25, 1911, 146 garment workers died in a fire. The victims were mostly young immigrant women but among them were also immigrant men and children too. These women and men across New York City had had a protest in 1910 in where they demanded unionized workplaces. Unions helped these workers protect their rights. They deserved the right to have respectab... ... double digit wage and not some dollars and a few cents an hour. Fixing the way financial aid is distributed, the money available, and the cost of college education would be a solution due to the criterion to qualify for full financial aid coverage is ridiculous. I'd first want to start with making public school something more year round. This would eliminate teaching as a "seasonal" job. Requiring more hours in school, less holidays and by focusing on the â€Å"No Child Left Behind† policy, it would benefit students to learn what’s necessary including circumstances where they’d face the real world. It is crucial and necessary in building a better New York so that our fellow New Yorkers do become our future. Pushing them into to succeeding in essential subjects like math and science, it would prepare the future of America for college and not discourage them from career.

Bacterial Concentration and Diversity

The objective of this particular paper was to study the results that were extracted when bacterial communities were formed. These bacterial communities were formed through the process of the reproducibility of small volume of repeat sampling from replicate bioreactors with stabilized continuous-flow chicken cecal bacterial communities. The results referring to the bacterial concentration and diversity were then analyzed by phenotypic, biochemical and ribotype analysis. To grow bacteria a stable environment is the most essential requirement this stable and a constant environment is known as steady-state conditions. This allows bacterial cultures to be obtained in a reproducible manner for batch consistency. The cultural efficacy was determined by taking an assumption that the aliquot taken from the cultures were identical and therefore did not overall affect the results to be determined by the particular experiment (bacterial culture). Mixed samples of avian cecal material were used to establish replicate bioreactor cultures. Repetitive samplings of the planktonic components were done to determine if all aliquots had the like bacterial contents within the same bioreactor.Consistency was seen during this repetitive sampling process but changes were seen in the specific composition of the resulting communities that initiated from one supply of cecal assortment. These are the basis on which the whole experiment and the methodology are based on. METHODOLOGY: †¢ Bioreactor and Sampling Design: The cecal contents were extracted from 150 birds (chicken) and then thoroughly mixed under sterile anaerobic conditions. Three replicate bioreactors (Bioflo ® 110 Fermentor/Bioreactor, New Brunswick Scientific Co, Inc., Edison, NJ) were used. The steady-state conditions were maintained by keeping the cultures under continuous-flow conditions at a flow rate of 0. 8 ml/min and also flushed with carbon dioxide that was free of any oxygen. For the first 48 hours the pH of the bioreactor was maintained to a stable 6. 2  ± 0. 3. Then for 3 weeks the cultures were allowed to reach equilibrium the planktonic component was sampled 11 times during this 3 weeks period. After this period 1ml aliquots were collected for analysis. i. e. pH measurement , bacterial isolation etc.†¢ Bacterial Isolation and Preliminary Identification: The material obtained from the bioreactor was sampled and some of the bacterial cultures obtained were quantified by growth of a 10? l aliquot on selective media in triplicate. The triplicate had a 5% sheep blood and was used to determine hemolytic reactions and for the recovery and the enumeration of the aerobic microbial species. The identification and the isolation of the aerobic bacteria was done by streaking the 10  µl aliquots onto TS-blood agar , Brilliant Green Agar, BGA; Becton Dickinson, Sparks, MD), CHROMagar E.coli and Orientation, MacConkey, mEnterococcus, and Rogosa plates. These plates were then incubated for 24 hours at thirty seven degrees. Likewise anaerobic bacteria were isolated too but the streaking was done onto Brucella-blood agar, Phenylethyl alcohol agar (Becton Dickinson, Sparks, MD), Veillonella, and BBE plates. The plates were then incubated anaerobically for 48-72hours at the same temperature. These bacteria were also tested for aero tolerance. †¢ Enumeration:The total aerobic and anaerobic population levels were enumerated by serial dilation onto TS-blood agar, MacConkey, mEnterococcus agars or Brucella-blood agar plates, respectively. †¢ Ribotype Characterization: Isolates from the bacterial lawns were collected and analyzed by using RiboPrinter ® Microbial Characterization System following the manufacturer's instruction using lytic enzymes. Endonuclease EcoRI was used to cleave the DNA and gel electrophoresis was used to separate the fragments and analysis was done using a modern hybridization blotting technique. The DNA hybridized was labeled rRNA operon prob de rived from Escherichia coli, and the bands were detected by chemiluminescence. The image formed was captured and transferred to the RMCS database and data were normalized to a standard marker set. The images were compared with the 6448 EcoRI riboprint patterns in the DuPont database and a 900 EcoRI riboprint pattern custom in-house database (USDA, ARS, College Station, TX). †¢ Data Analysis: For each set of combined cecal material the above mentioned 3 replicate bioreactor were established. These were then analyzed for enumeration and characterization (eleven per bioreactor). The statistics were represented in tabular form. Commercially available software was used to analyze and calculate data. Differences in cfu/ml were compared among the replicate bioreactors. MAIN RESULT: The collecting of bacteria cultures or any other organism is greatly affected by the sample size and the frequency of organisms being sampled in a particular environment. Some of the processes or the methods described above also have limitations due to different constraints that govern their working e.g. enumeration. Enumeration of bacteria is affected by many factors including individual species growth rates, fitness of each competing species etc. therefore the bacteria produced or grown in a selective media maybe less productive when exposed to competition from many other species in a non-selective media culture. The probability of collection is greatly affected by the spatial distribution of organisms. As a rule the sampling requirement must increase as the degree of unit aggregation increases.Enumeration is also affected by aggregation and may account for some of the variation reported in the bacterial quantification. Therefore considerations should be given to the sampling size when using aliquots for inoculation from cultures with known aggregating species. An important thing to mention here that whatever the sampling technique is used there are also certain limitations associate d with sampling. It is not only quite difficult to harvest all species comprehensively but our present technological inability also creates a hindrance because we are unable to artificially culture all bacterial species. It was also seen that the efficiency of detection of pathogenic bacteria is affected by dilution i. e. a lower efficiency of detection was achieved where the prevalence of the target bacteria was diluted. A threshold quantity of specific bacteria maybe required for the proper mix. Adjustments in population density, adhesion and diversity which occur during culturing period greatly affects this observation. CONCLUSION: The aim of this study or experiment was to determine reproducibility of small volume repeat sampling with the help of a bioreactor.Basically bacterial concentration and diversity were the two important factors that were being concentrated these two quantities were analyzed within stabalised continuous-flow chicken cecal bacterial communities initiated b y replicate aliquots taken from thoroughly mixed samples. Pooled cecal material was created from layer chicks to establish the bioreactors. After a steady-state was reached the plankton components were sampled repetitively for three weeks and was then characterized by phenotypic, biochemical and ribotype analysis. No notable differences were found in the bacterial concentrations that came from the same bioreactor. Differences were found in bioreactors initiated from the same stock material. BIBLIOGRAPHY 1. Rose for Emily

Aleksandra Filipovski English 1102 Dr. William Belford January 23, 2012 Compare and contrast Faulkner’s characterizations of Abner Snopes in â€Å"Barn Burning† and Miss Emily in â€Å"A Rose for Emily†. How does Faulkner generate sympathy in the reader for each character even though both characters are guilty of terrible crimes? Toward which character are you more sympathetic? Explain why. Two characters are worth to compare in Faulkner’s fictions Miss Emily in â€Å"A Rose for Emily†, and Abner Snopes in â€Å"Barn Burning†. Emily Grierson is an important figure in the town. She is not having any social life there, mostly quiet lady, but still a big element of the town’s life. On the contrary, Abner Snopes is a loud person that most people tend to avoid. They are completely opposite but surprisingly they have similarities in their personalities. First of all, the two characters have different backgrounds. Miss Emily is from a wealthy family, lives in a huge beautiful house, rebuilt after the Civil War. Her house is in the middle of Jefferson, at least it was when it was built. The nicest, richest area. The main character in Faulkner’s fiction is Emily Grierson. Miss Emily will always be defined by her bizarre habits. Since we can’t follow her to the house we don’t know much. Tobe is a regular town man who helps and works for Miss Emily. Different generations and different characters treat her differently. They think about her more as an idol than a freak lady. But Emily is just a human, who lost her dad and her loved husband too. Their color of hair, which is grey, defines what age are they in. They are older people, and stubborn. They don’t like changes. The color of Tobe’s skin shows us his available options in the town and in that period the black people were the servant and the slaves, and the white represented the wealthy families. His skin isolates him from the rest of the people. Tobe is just a servant who serves Miss Emily. He is going to the grocery store every day, and coming back with a full basket. We never see inside the house, so we can’t really tell how the life is in the building. Miss Emily never goes out from her home. The only time someone saw her was on the second floor out of the window for a second. Emily was a mistery for everyone in the town. There is something about Emily and her physical appearance. She is described as an angel by the narrator after her father’s death. And she is also described twice as an idol in the fiction. This confuses us because we have a picture in our heads that she is a crazy and an insane person. She killed someone how she can be named or compared with an idol.

Free Essays on Civil Disobedience As A Response To Apathy

Racial equality has been a highly charged issue throughout the history of the United States of America. During the 1960’s, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., rose to prominence as the premier spokesperson for the civil rights movement, demanding an end to the de facto segregation that existed in defiance of constitutional, and in his opinion moral, law. Nonviolent civil disobedience was the technique of choice for King and his supporters as they attempted to force the established power structure into negotiating the abolition of unjust laws. Jailed in 1963 for participating in one such â€Å"direct action† in Birmingham, Alabama, King used his time in prison to pen â€Å"Letter from Birmingham Jail†, a measured response to fellow clergymen critical of his actions as untimely threats to order. Repeatedly expressing his disappointment with the apathy of the â€Å"white moderate† in his letter, King proves the necessity of direct action to overcome this apathy an d achieve true racial equality. King characterizes the white moderate as one â€Å"more devoted to ‘order’ than to justice† (189), and therefore as one incognizant of the reason that society establishes the rule of law. Moral justice, he argues, is the ultimate purpose of the law, and that obedience to an unjust law is as immoral as violence. Furthermore, he recognizes that the unbearable consequences of segregation may seem far removed from the everyday reality of the white moderate. Therefore, direct action in the form of peaceful protest is not only the morally correct course of action, but also pressures the many who prefer to ignore the situation to take a stand by disrupting the comfortable routine of their lives. King writes, â€Å"Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection† (189). The goal is not to win wholehearted support in one fell swoop, but to focus attention on segregation and polarize opinions as a starting point. King also characterizes... 75th Percentile SAT Scores

An Explanation of 25th / 75th Percentile SAT Scores Much of the SAT data on this site and elsewhere on the web show SAT scores for the 25th and 75th percentile of matriculated students. But what exactly do these numbers mean, and why dont colleges present SAT data for the full range of scores? Key Takeaways: SAT Percentiles The 25th and 75th percentiles mark the boundaries for the middle 50% of admitted students. Half of students scored above or below these numbers.Having a score above the 75th percentile does not guarantee admission. Grades, essays, and other factors are important parts of the equation.Having a score below the 25th percentile does not mean you should not apply. Just be sure you consider the school a reach. How to Interpret 25th and 75th Percentile SAT Score Data Consider a college profile that presents the following SAT scores for the 25th and 75th percentiles: SAT Critical Reading: 500 / 610SAT Math: 520 / 620SAT Writing: 490 / 600 The lower number is for the 25th percentile of students who  enrolled in (not just applied to) the college. For the school above, 25% of enrolled students received a math score of 520 or lower. The upper number is for the 75th percentile of students who enrolled in the college. For the above example, 75% of enrolled students got a math score of 620 or lower (looked at another way, 25% of students got above a 620). For the school above, if you have an SAT math score of 640, you would be in the top 25% of applicants for that one measure. If you have a math score of 500, you are in the bottom 25% of applicants for that measure. Being in the bottom 25% is obviously not ideal, and your admissions chances will be lessened, but you still have a chance of getting in. Assuming the school has holistic admissions, factors such as strong letters of recommendation, a winning application essay, and meaningful extracurricular activities can all help compensate for less-than-ideal SAT scores. Most important of all is a strong academic record. Numerous studies have shown that high school grades are a better predictor of college success than standardized test scores. What the SAT Numbers Mean for You Understanding these numbers is important when you plan how many colleges to apply to, and when you figure out which schools are a reach, a match, or a safety. If your scores are below the 25th percentile numbers, you should consider the school a reach even if other parts of your application are strong. Note that this does not mean you wont get in- remember that 25% of students who enroll have a score that is at or below that lower number. However, when your scores are on the low end for admitted students, youll have an uphill fight to win admission. Because SAT scores still play a significant role in the admissions process for the majority of selective colleges and universities, youll want to do all you can to get the best scores possible. This may mean taking the SAT more than once, often at the end of junior year and again at the beginning of senior year. If your junior year scores arent what you had hoped for, you can use the summer to take practice tests and learn test-taking strategies. Marketing communication mix

Marketing communication mix ABSTRACT: The whole work revolves around the subject of marketing communication mix. Considered to be derived from marketing mix. Communication mix consists of advertising, personal selling, sales promotion, direct marketing and PR. For I-phones they use caples principle of advertisement. Advertising is effective but expensive Personal selling is expensive but is considered as cost-effective Sales promotion uses pull or push strategy. Direct marketing is common way used now days. To select right communication mix we should always use products life cycle to determine. Should keep a good eye on products sale to find the most effective way for advertisement Characteristic and role of each and every communication mix differ. LITERATURE REVIEW: I followed three different books and used AIDA, john caples principle and example of i-phone in my assignment. Most of the items I used were written by Philip kotler. I tried to use some facts and figures to prove my findings and as books being credible source I tried to use them rather than using internet sources. Mostly pictures are copied from internet only and all the items are referenced accordingly. Dr. kotler is considered one of the worlds leading authority on management and is considered pioneer writer in the field of international marketing and branding. MARKETING COMMUNICATION MIX: In this era of digital technology and competition, no one can survive without marketing; either its the product, brand or a service. The best definition of marketing was given by Al Ries and Trout â€Å"marketing is the performance of those activities which seek to accomplish organizations objective by anticipating customer or client needs and directing flow of need-satisfying goods and services from producer to customer or client.†(Source: Al Ries, Trout jack, 2006, marketing warfare, McGraw hill companies. Inc.) MARKETING MIX: Marketing alone couldnt be taken on account to anticipate and fulfill the customer needs. To just check the existence and evidence of presence of marketing communication mix we will look at 7 Ps of marketing. In 1960 Mccarthy came up with 4 Ps of marketing. The marketing mix according to some authors was already used as term before her in 1940s while later in 1980 booms and Bernard came up with 3 more Ps. The use of these 3 Ps is still debatable and is criticized by many people. (Sources: http://www.continuumlearning.com/Customer%20Services_7Ps%20of%20Services.pdf, http://www.netmba.com/marketing/mix/) MARKETING COMMUNICATION MIX AND IMPORTANCE: As from above we have seen that the marketing is not only about promoting your product but also depends other 6 factors but as we are talking about communication mix, it mostly relates to promotion. The communication is required between the customer and the business in order to increase the transactions or to maximize the daily sales of the business. It is important to mention here that the right communication mix is important to be chosen which suites the business needs and is the clearest way for the business to convey the message. Belch, E. and Belch A. describe Integrated Marketing Communications as â€Å"a concept of marketing communications planning that recognizes the added value of a comprehensive plan that evaluates the strategic roles of a variety of communication disciplines and combines these disciplines to provide clarity, consistency and maximum communications impact†.(source: http://www.oppapers.com/essays/MarketingCommunicationsMix/13818.). In 1961 according to the same author Albert Frey was the first one to distinguish between communication tools and offering. Simply saying offerings are the service u offer used e.g. product, price and brand etc while tools you use such as place; promotion etc. so according to him which ever way you take you will use all your approaches for people. (Smith p r, Taylor Jonathan, 2004, 4th edition, marketing communications, Gutenberg press ltd, Malta) From all the discussion above we can conclude that the communication mix tools are as follows: The most common used promoting media used are:Internet, telesales, banners, broachers, radio, TV, telephone, newspaper etc. According to caple principle of promoting or advertising: Get attention Hold attention Create desire Make it believable Prove its a bargain Make it easy to buy Give reason to buy CASE STUDY: From my point of view, I-phone uses this kind of strategy for their sales. Most of the times we see the I-phone holding the whole last page of newspaper and showing what this product can do and the other ordinary phone might not be able to. The product before and after launch is advertised so many times to remind the customer of the phone that a lot of customers are attracted. As result many customers buy the product and we normally see the line in front of apple shops when the product is launched. They use sale promotion strategy for ending line of product. I.e. they used the sales promotion where they were finishing line of 2.5g (1st generation I-phone) where they reduced the price of phone, in order to boost the sale and finish the line of product when it was on declining stage. This helped company to get some potential customers. ADVERTISING: Advertising is said as very simple but expensive form of promotion. Advertising can be different depending on product or media used. For example on TV or it can also be in the form of internet advertisement. But this is considered most expensive because anyone who uses this have to either use large campaigns or use their lots of time in this kind of promotion. Advertising is the form of promotion is considered as non-personal promotional mix because the business doesnt know if their message is received by its customer or not, do people understand the product etc. CHARACTERESTIC OF ADVERTISMENT: According to Kotler characteristic of advertising are Public presentation: advertising is considered as highly public mode of communication and people consider this kind of promotion more because they consider that the offer they have been made through the media is standard. Pervasiveness: it is the medium of communication where a seller can repeat its message many times and this as a result help buyer to compare the sellers product with other competitors or substitute available. Amplified expensiveness: means that if company use little bit of different way or expensive way from its competitor, it might result in getting buyers attention. Impersonality: means that the customer or buyer is not as much motivated to buy the product or service as much as he is through a sales agent. As it is one way communication so the customer might wants to know about the product but cant because he cant speak to advertisement. The most common way of advertisement is TV, radio, newspaper, broachers and magazines etc.The advertisement is really beneficial in creating long term relationship between consumer, product and business. E.g. coca-cola uses all time red color for advertisement of their product and uses same advertisement many times a day to attract customer. PURPOSE OF ADVERTISMENT: The main purpose of advertisement is to get buyers attention, which creates interest and a desire rises in customer following the action (buying). According to the same website UK advertising expenditure in 2008 was  £18.6 billion. Not only that but also if we notice in our daily life routine we might go to some place and pay attention to the product for which we have seen advertisement recently. Sometime on local buses we see some poster and think that do we need the product or not and sometime even though we dont need it we might end up buying it. PERSONAL SELLING: It is considered to be one of most cost-effective kind of promotion. Some books also consider this as the most expensive one as well because of wage cost to the company, travelling cost and the company always have to offer the people with some kind of incentives to boost sales. Personal selling is considered effective because the business can feel the consumers requirement and can make up a package for consumer in order to fulfill their needs. The consumer can also look at the packages that suits best to their needs and can also tell the sales representative about their needs .e.g. British gas etc. Normally we see people from gas and electricity companies doing this kind of promotion. CHARACTERESTIC OF PERSONAL SELLING: According to Kotler(1997) the main characteristics are Personal confrontation: involves consumer and business representative where the need of consumer can be felt by the supplier. They can either come to some point of agreement or the business can offer some flexibility to consumer in order to gain or retrieve a customer. Cultivation: means that the business can adjust their offers according to customers need in order to maintain good relationship between business and customer. Sales representatives mostly use affectionate and friendly kind of approach towards their customers. Response: means that the buyers mostly respond to their seller and their response can be taken in account to increase sale. The response can be either good or bad depending on what customer feels about the product. ROLE: The main role of personal selling is mostly Acquire new potential customers and provide old customers the best service. Try to sale the product efficiently After sale provide them with best services Close the sale If resources or stock become less try to allocate other resources to make sure that customer remain in business with us. Though this kind of selling is decreasing due to presence of media like internet, TV and telephones. The costly method still used but only by some companies. Most of the companies have changed with changing world. SALES PROMOTION: It is normally used to boost the sale mostly at declining stage of the product. It offers the customer with either discounts or some kind of other special offers which results in customer attraction and as a result customer buys the product. Normally business uses coupon, special offers ands discounts etc. This kind of promotion is only good for short term and doesnt lead to long term relationship between business and customer. For example some companies use even ebay to do their promotions by using bid auctions like a company called EOL (end-o-line). Another is example is to supply customer with offers like by 1 and get 1 free etc. CHARACTERESTIC: According to Kotler three distinctive benefits and characteristics are Communication: mostly this kind of promotion gets the customers attention and provides customer with the information which may lead to transaction. Incentives: the business introduces some kind of concession, offers or vouchers to increase the sale temporarily. Invitation: the customers are usually forced to do the transaction soon by saying either till stocks last or till the date. This helps business to get more transactions in the limited time. ROLE: Sales promotion normally uses push, pull. These play an important role in any sales promotion. According to davedolak.com business uses push strategy to get the traders to stock their items and also give good offers, as a result, the trade people put more sales effort in order to maximize their profit. The product might be sold again to one of the wholesalers or end consumers. This is normally used in B2B relationship. The pull strategy is that the consumer is offered a good discount on buying product from the business. Sometime it is also used as a term that the business waits for the consumer to turn up and order the product and is produced, as they cant stock of the products life cycle. This is used for B2C relationship. Normally car suppliers and showrooms use this kind of strategy to promote sale to consumer and finish the old stock. PUBLIC RELATIONS: This kind of promotion is used by company to make their image better in public eyes. There is a different department for this kind of promotion. These departments mostly try to improve their companys goodwill in consumers eye. For example Durex the condom makers donated 50,000 condoms to NGOs in December on world aids day. The other thing they started was that they went to the social networking website â€Å"Facebook† and launched some games in order to increase awareness and sales. The company or business might do some charities or sponsor some kind of good cause. The companies might also use newsletter or news releases to improve PR. CHARACTERESTICS: According to Kortley(1997) role of PR is High credibility: most of the time people trust news or articles more than other like advertisement, personal selling or sales promotion. ABILITY: it is much easier to catch people who avoid personal selling. So the message is read by more people and this might result in more sales. DRAMATIZATION: it also has potential of setting company or product reputation at the level which company is not in real life. This can be the result of advertising as well. ROLES: In normal routine of life these people play an important role in image of a company as they are the one responsible for news releases and the charitable functions. The PR has to make sure that they do their work through the right channel so that it can be recognized by the people. E.g. they shouldnt help the cause of cutting trees as it might hurt many peoples feelings. They should try to reach those people who cannot be reached because they avoid personal selling etc. another thing that they should try to help campaigns with their product rather than money as it will improve the products sale and image. For example IBM provides non-profit companies with discounted price on purchase of their items. DIRECT MARKETING: This type of promotion is used by mails, telemarketing and catalog marketing. This is quite effective way of promotion because the response can be taken on account to increase sale or acquire new customers from other competitors. E.g. sometime we receive a call on our numbers offering different services or products (especially on landlines). Some other schools of thoughts also consider e-marketing as a part of this promotion type like e-mails for promotions or sales. (Kutler, 1997). CHARACTERESTICS: According to Kutler(1997), there are four types of direct marketing. Nonpublic: the letter or e-mail or telephone is for specific person who have subscribed to some offers. Customized: normally can be different for two different customers depending on their buying history. Up-to-date: offer can be prepared delivered quickly using e-marketing or telesales. Interactive: customer can be offered with much more different choices in this kind of promotion. ROLE: Normally companies use bombardment of e-mail to many customers and wait for their response. This way have been used a lot now days and is becoming less effective as people always consider them as junk e-mail. Another way of e-marketing is using social websites like facebook to introduce or advertise the product. E.g. durex used this kind of strategy and introduced some games on social networking website to increase the sale. Another way is cataloging, where the businesses send the people to drop the catalogue and the consumer can call and order the product. Last but not least now they use special television channels and phone calls to inspire and get some business from the potential customers. CRITICAL ANLYSIS: As from all the information we have seen the characteristic which are most probably advantages while in introduction of ever kind of promotion I have discussed some disadvantages as well to make sure that the business using any kind of this can know the harmful and useful points of their promotion and the role tells us the importance of the particular communication mix. IMPORTANCE: The importance of marketing communication mix can also be felt when we see that it is connected with the marketing mix. The research on this started from 1940. It flourished with the entrance of new media. Businesses always try to use communication mix to get the share and attention of market. Due to increased competition level we can use one of the tools to acquire new customers in the market. Right communication mix can be used by realizing right target customers. SELECTION OF RIGHT COMMUNICATON MIXES: As we discussed earlier about the I-phone, we will now see how the product should be advertised through out its life cycle to make it a success. PRODUCT LIFE CYCLE: First stage is pre introduction stage where we use very small amount on advertising and just to let people know that we are launching some new product. On 2nd stage i.e. introduction we use PR and advertisement. On3rd stage of growth we need heavy amount of money to be spent in order to make product successful in the market. At maturity level we use less advertising as a tool but now we use more and more sales promotion and PR. At the decline we use sales promotion but some company might use direct marketing as a tool as well to provide customers with good offers. The first and foremost thing for any campaign is that it should know who their target market is and what age group they are looking for. Then depending on their objective they can use one of the models to solve their problem. COMMUNICATION OBJECTIVE: Depending on market type the company or business should enter in, the business should decide their communication objective depending on their product and policies. Depending on your product, target market and business you can select the model and decide what should be the strategy from pre introduction stage till the decline stage. For example in case of an innovation free trial is important. Apple used this kind of strategy when they allowed people to take computers, pc or laptops to home and could use it over the weekend as trial and can buy it after they think the product is efficient enough for use. COMMUNICATION LANDSCAPE: According to Kotler (2008) businesses are moving towards the focused marketing rather than mass marketing. The businesses use the tool of advertisement and promotion in the places where they should and only focus on their target market and people rather than the old technique of sending their message to many people which may result as one of the do the transaction. People do not pay attention to ads and promotion of the product they might not be interested in, most of the time they try to skip the section of advertisements and breaks while watching TV. So it is important to have the right focus group now days to increase sale and transactions. Kotler and his fellow writers used word of broadcasting which is to play the advertisement for mass media thinking that it might result in transaction. The other word he used was narrowcast where only interested and potential customers are target. He used these terms in his â€Å"shifting marketing communication model†. According to them due to change in ICT and presence of internet people are motivated to use online sources to watch their favorite programs and skip the ads in between the breaks. Only few people might watch those. Although mass media like TV and radio is evergreen but is decreased because of presence of internet. An average person spends 5 times more time on internet than TV. Thats why companies now use their ads on internet and use social networking websites for publicity etc. e.g. companies like Cadbury uses the statement on their website â€Å"find us on facebook†.(source: kotley Philip, armstrong garry, wong veronica, saunders john, 2008, principles of marketing, fifth edition, pearson education ltd. ) CONCLUSION: All the companies or businesses have to spend in this field to make sure that they get the expected results from the product and the business. If the company fails to use right communication mix at the right time, their product will be a waste for them and might result in little sale. All 5 communication mix together can lead to a good business, as they all can be used depending on life cycle of the product. The communication objectives should be kept in mind for a successful business. Depending on the product the message should be designed appropriately to reach to the audience. RECOMMENDATIONS: Businesses should identify their needs first. Businesses should try to fix the budget for promotional and advertising purpose. Businesses should allocate resources in case of no resource available to keep the campaigns going. Business should also allocate fixed amount of money or products to PR as well. Sales promotion times should not be fixed on introduction time. The message should be designed professionally and to the perfection. For the products affordable method should be chosen. The business should try to use same logo or slogan for their products. PR should try to use news release and other form of media to improve reputation of the company. Checks on sale should be carried out by the business in order to find most effective communication mix for their company.
